2 CONT Alfred and Sarah (Chadduck) Caton, were considered Virginians (West Vi r
2 CONC ginia wasn't formed until 1863), They were married in their native St a
2 CONC te in Marshall County, living there and in what is now West Virgini a u
2 CONC ntil 1830, when they crossed the Ohio River and moved into Belmon t Cou
2 CONC nty, Ohio.  The marriage record shows Sarah's surname of Chadduc k spel
2 CONC led as Chaedick and that they were married on 23 January in 1828 . The C
2 CONC aton Family bible indicates that they were married on 27 Januar y 1828. T
2 CONC heir marriage was blessed with five sons and five daughters .  Two of t
2 CONC he sons, both which were named Charles died in infancy. Th e first was b
2 CONC orn in 1830, the second in 1831. Alfred's name appears o n the 1830 Cen
2 CONC sus in Pease Township, Belmont County, Ohio being show n with Sarah and S
2 CONC usannah.  Unfortuantely a 1840 Census has not been l ocated.

2 CONT Alfred and Sarah (Chadduck) Caton next appear in the 1850 York townshi p
2 CONC , Belmont County, Ohio. About 15 years after arriving in Ohio, aroun d 1
2 CONC 845, Alfred and Sarah again found themselves on the move. Once agai n i
2 CONC t was westward where they took up their residency in Missouri appea rin
2 CONC g on the 1860 census in Vesmoine township, Clark County, Missouri .  Cl
2 CONC ark County is in the very northeast corner of Missouri located o n the M
2 CONC ississippi River. At some point after the 1860 census the famil y moved d
2 CONC own the Mississippi River to Lincoln County, Missouri where t hey next a
2 CONC ppear on the 1870 census when they appear in Prairie townshi p, Lincoln C
2 CONC ounty, Missouri.  Alfred and Sarah remain in Lincoln Count y, Missouri u
2 CONC ntil at least June 1880 when they are next enumerated o n the census in P
2 CONC rairie township, Lincoln County, Missouri.

2 CONT In Alexander Caton's biography published in "The History of Washingto n C
2 CONC ounty, Arkansas by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889" it is stat ed t
2 CONC hat Alfred and Sarah "are residing in Montgomery County, Mo. He i s eig
2 CONC hty-nine years of age, and she is about seventy-five. They have b een f
2 CONC armers all their lives, and have been members of the Missionary B aptis
2 CONC t Church for many years. Two sons and five daughters are living o f the
2 CONC ir family of eleven children."

2 CONT While it may be true that Alfred and Sarah were living in Montgomery C o
2 CONC unty, Missouri no specific document beyond the Goodspeed publicatio n w
2 CONC as located to substantiate this as Alfred passed away 09 Nov 1889 .  No r
2 CONC ecord was located to specifically indicate WHERE he passed awa y nor wh
2 CONC ere he was laid to rest.

2 CONT At some point, after Alfred passed away in 1889, Sarah (Chadduck) Cato n r
2 CONC eturned to Ohio County, West Virginia as shown on the 1900 census r esi
2 CONC ding with Elizabeth (Caton) McGinnis' daughter, Edith May (McGinnis ) a
2 CONC nd her second husand Archibald Hupp Graham. It is stated within Sar ah (
2 CONC Chadduck) Caton's obituary in The Wheeling Daily Intelligencer (WV ) da
2 CONC ted 30 Oct 1900 that she was residing with her daughter, Elizabet h (Ca
2 CONC ton) McGinnis.  While it is true that Sarah and Elizabeth did liv e tog
2 CONC ether, the 1900 census for the Triadelphia township, Ohio County , West V
2 CONC irginia actually shows that they both were living with Elizabe th's dau
2 CONC ghter, Edith May (McGinnis) and her second husand Archibald Hu pp Graha
2 CONC m.

2 CONT It is worth noting that on the 1850 US census there is a "daughter" si m
2 CONC ply identified as Mary who is 1 year old.

2 CONT This is Mary Ellen Starkey, who is the daughter of Susannah Caton.  Su s
2 CONC annah Caton (Alfred and Sarah [Chadduck] Caton's oldest) was born 0 5 A
2 CONC pr 1829 and married to William Harrison Starkey on 02 March 1848 .  Sus
2 CONC annah passed away 14 Sep 1849.  William either couldn't, or woul dn't, r
2 CONC aise Mary. William remarried on 07 Sep 1851 to Mary A Powell .  Mary El
2 CONC len appears on the 1850 US census with her grandparents BU T it is impl
2 CONC ied that she is Mary Caton. This is NOT true as Mary is st ill with Alf
2 CONC red and Sarah on the 1860 census and is correctly identifi ed as Mary S
2 CONC tarkey.
